Arminius x IFFR: Blaze

Music and film bring people together, a mission close to the hearts of IFFR and Debatpodium Arminius. From May to October, join us in the beautiful surroundings of Arminius to watch, discuss and explore the powerful synergies between music and film.

Een groep mensen zit op de veranda van een huis in een landelijk gebied en lijkt instrumenten te bespelen.

Our series offers a journey into new sonic worlds: from the unsung female pioneers of electronic music, a bitter-sweet biopic on enigmatic Texan singer Blaze Foley, and the early-2000s London alt-rock scene. Discover unexpected sounds and trailblazing musicians, played loud and on the big screen.

About Blaze (2018) dir. Ethan Hawke

“One of the things that always bugs me about music biopics,” said Blaze director Ethan Hawke in an interview, “is that they’re always about someone who made it big.” Enigmatic country singer-songwriter Blaze Foley never quite became the legend that he wanted to be. Although highly thought-of by his misfit peers in the Texas Outlaw movement, his life was plagued by vice and cut short in violent circumstances in 1989. Hawke places Foley’s deeply personal music front-and-centre in a fractured narrative that roams freely through the smoked red hues of his life, through seedy, seductive bars like the Austin Outhouse where he recorded his last show, and through the love of those close to him. Blaze is a celebration of the chaos of artistry and the complexity of remembrance.

Admission: €10 or €7 for students and under-23
