Old Han was caretaker of the local opera company all his life. Now he has retired, he gets bored. He misses the every¡day routine of his old job and supervising his younger collea¡gues. He would like to start over. Then he comes across of group of old people singing opera in a park. From that momenton, Han has an aim in life and he becomes involved in the gro¡up’s organisation and rehearsals. They are a little too enthu¡siastic in their preparations for the local talent contest; they lose and conflicts are unavoidable. Han is too bossy and then everyone gets involved with affairs.For Fun is characterised by a realistic style, an unmistakable sense of humour and eye for detail. Both film-maker Ning Ying and the actors, only three of them professionals, have been praised for their achievements, even if working with amateurs wasn’t always easy. Ning: ‘The film should really have been called “For Suffering”. The arguments, the tears that went on + + you have no idea how real those tantrums and dramas were in For Fun.’ During the last Berlin Film Festival For Fun won the Fipresci Prize and it was deemed the best début at film festi¡vals in Tokyo and San Sebastian.
