Yuka arrives at Seaside Hotel in a sleepy seaside resort. The season has passed. She is alone, her travelling companion couldn’t make it, she says. The nightporter asks if she wants to go deep sea diving, but she doesn’t, even though she’s very bored. Nightporter Ken has his own problems. His less than steady girlfriend Mika has dumped him. He lives with a man who is confined to his bed. Is it his father? A relationship develops between Yuka and Ken. But Ken is withdrawn and surly and won’t let Yuka into his life. On the beach, Yuka meets Mika and they get talking. Mika invites Yuka to come and live with her in her apartment. Her new lover hasn’t turned up, so she has plenty of room. A situation of relative harmony emerges: Mika, Yuka and Ken watch TV together or swim in the sea. Until Tatsu, Ken’s old schoolfriend drops by.After his début Timeless Melody, Okuhara has made a meditative film about young people searching for balance in their relationships with friends and family. Motivation for the film was the fact that in 1999, Okuhara and a group of friends rented a house by the sea. There they decided to make this film.Okuhara: ‘I live in the city in a country where the future of film, but also of everything else (even my life) seems so far away, and so uncertain that it hardly seems real.’
