There Is No Direction is the story of a quest. Through the lens of her camera, Sarah Bertrand captures a real mosaic of film makers who have often been cherished in Rotterdam. To mention but a few of the twenty: Abel Ferrara, Larry Clark, Francis Ford Coppola, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Emir Kusturica, Philippe Grandrieux, Youssef Chahine, Jonas Mekas. Travelling from one country to the next, the same question returns again and again: ‘Film making, why?’ And: ‘What does someone feel who is a “cineast”?’ Instead of finding new answers, Bertrand starts by experiencing the same stabs of pain as the people she meets. Maybe she’s unconsciously becoming a film maker herself… (EC)
