The Russian director and photographer Yevgeni Yufit is selected as Film Maker in Focus of this year’s festival. The festival honours this director by screening his four feature films (including the world première of his Bipedalism) and eight short films, and by organising a photo exhibition. In the main hall of the Rotterdam Schouwburg, a long wall is adorned with a series of his very gloomy, black & white, large-size photographs. The universe of the artist becomes immediately apparent: he makes little distinction between man and matter. As this selection of his large prints demonstrates, Yevgeni Yufit combines his obsession for the macabre with an almost scientific, detached and patient gaze.
