According to a Thai legend, trees and forests have female spirits in them. Such a spirit plays an important, albeit intangible role in Nymph, the seventh film by the Thai director Pen-ek Ratanaruang (6ixtynin9, Last Life in the Universe), which is largely set in a forest. There is one tree in particular that has a special attraction for the photographer Nop, who is in the forest for a photo shoot and has taken his wife May along with him.
May has been having an affair with a colleague for some time. When Nop disappears without trace in the forest, May realises how much she loves him. When he suddenly reappears, the mysterious experience in the forest seems to have changed him a great deal. With a calm tempo, a refined sound design and puzzling events, Ratanaruang manages to evoke a fascinating and uncanny mood.
