Phantom Thread live score by Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra

Live music and cinema come together in this exclusive screening of Phantom Thread, the latest film from Paul Thomas Anderson. On Friday 2 February this film can be seen – for the first time in the Netherlands – at IFFR, where the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra will play the film’s soundtrack live.

The orchestra will be assisted by musicians from the London Contemporary Orchestra and conductor Robert Ames. This is sure to result in the kind of beautiful music we have come to expect from Anderson’s films. From the delicate songs of Aimee Mann on the soundtrack to Magnolia to the experiments by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood on Junun – this American director always manages to do something great with his soundtracks. The filmmaker once again joins forces with Greenwood on Phantom Thread. The original film score was recorded by the London Contemporary Orchestra.

Renowned couturier Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister (Lesley Manville) are the focal point of the glamourous world of British fashion in 1950s post-war London. They dress the aristocracy, film stars, upper-class ladies and women who have pretentions to high society in the distinguished style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go in Woodcock’s life, offering the confirmed bachelor both inspiration and companionship. But then he meets a self-assured young woman by the name of Alma (Vicky Krieps), and she quickly becomes a permanent feature in his life – both as muse and lover. However, Woodcock experiences this love as a constrictive straightjacket that disrupts the life he has so painstakingly tailor-made for himself.

In his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints a beautifully designed portrait of an artist on a creative voyage of discovery – and of the women who keep his world turning. Phantom Thread is the eighth film by Paul Thomas Anderson, and his second cooperation with Daniel Day-Lewis.
