The Doom Doc

With its glacial tempi, extremely high volume, repetitive riffs and ultra dark lyrics, doom – a subgenre of heavy metal – is the musical equivalent of ‘wading through thick, black treacle’. The Doom Doc focuses on the small, close-knit doom scene in northern English steel town Sheffield using interviews with Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) as well as members of Conan, Crowbar and Primitive Man. Fans and musicians seeking visceral experiences meet in independent venues, sweaty pubs and cellars.

Do it yourself is key to this (sometimes literally) underground scene fighting commercialisation and gentrification. With more and more venues in Sheffield closing, Holy Spider Promotions organises non-profit gigs. Why slowly becomes apparent: doom is a lifestyle, not a hobby. The super heavy sound, ideally accompanied by a fat spliff, offers a means of channeling anger, doubt and fear into ‘positive hate’.
