Drifting Petals

A filmmaker meets Jeff, a piano student, first in Australia and then in Hong Kong. In limbo and anxiety, Jeff roams the streets, meeting other people who are similarly confused. In Macau, the filmmaker’s birthplace, she meets a boy who reminds her of her brother who disappeared. In Drifting Petals, the viewer will find a poignant and poetic film about the search for the past and the future, with space for spirits and documentary images.

Fiction, but not quite. The filmmaker – out of shot, and voiced by Clara Law – has a lot in common with the renowned Law who, along with partner Eddie Fong, takes the major credits for this film. A personal project that springs directly from the depths of their creative hearts, shot using minimal means, and loosely composed – a work that encompasses painful family situations, but also politics and history, including footage of Hong Kong’s Umbrella movement and the 12-3 incident in Macau. An imagining of the lifeline between two cities and Law’s own ties to these.
